GOODWILL ART GUIDE — Action painting

SPORT

Greek statuary reflected the almost sacred value attached to sport in classical times, and the Minoan artists of Crete in 1500 BC portrayed women athletes leaping over the heads of bulls in religious ceremonies. Athletes were often depicted in ancient Chinese and Japanese pictures, and statuettes of acrobats were common in pre-Columbian art of the Americas.
In mediaeval Europe, artists painted pictures of archers practising, to show the sporting skills that might be useful in war. They also depicted their aristocratic patrons engaging in falconry, hunting, and playing versions of tennis.
