GOODWILL ART GUIDE — Painting Light

REFLECTIONS

A reflection is a truthful echo of an existing object on a smooth surface. It also exists, but cannot be touched, is impermanent, transitory, dependent on the angle and quality of the light which has formed it, and on the surface on which it is cast.
A stretch of clear water, calm or slow-flowing, with a mirror-like transparency provides an ideal surface. It is never motionless, the slightest breeze causes vibrations, which animate the reflected image.
For painters to suggest on canvas the subtle difference between the real world and its transitory reflection has been a tremendous challenge.
Reflections in a mirror glass seem to have quite a different function: they enlarge the viewer's field of vision.
