GOODWILL ART GUIDE — Formal elements in painting

PERSPECTIVE

Perspective is a secret weapon in the artist's armoury of skills. Renaissance painters were able to use the 'science' of perspective to experiment with ever-more dramatic ways of producing an illusion of depth on a flat surface.
The images illustrate how people have used linear perspective to construct complex buildings, and crowds of people. They carefully lay down horizons and vanishing points — with subtlety, or sometimes with 'heavy boots'. Uccello was the first artist to enjoy working out the distortions that occur when figures are viewed from unusual angles.
